SNATCHING GUEST'S HANDBAG

TWO UNIDENTIFIED youths riding a motorbike allegedly sprayed chilly powder into the eyes of an employee of a cash management company, and snatched a cash bag containing Rs 18 lakh in full public view on the dividing road of Sector 10-11 here on Monday.
The victim, identified as Samuel, is employed with a Chennai-based company, Radiant Cash Management Services Private Limited. According to Samuel, he had been working with the company for the last seven years and was entrusted with the task of daily collecting cash from various outlets in Panchkula and Chandigarh, and deposit it in designated banks.
The incident occurred around 11.30 am on one of the busiest roads of Panchkula in front of Sector 11 market when Samuel was on his way to a bank from his residence in Ajit Enclave, Dhakoli, to deposit the cash. Apart from the cash bag containing around Rs 18 lakh, which he had kept with him at his house, he said that he had collected Rs 3 lakh from McDonalds outlet, deposited it in Yes Bank in Sector 11 before leaving for SBI Bank, Sector 10, to deposit the rest of the amount.
However, there was inconsistency in his statements as he initially told the police that the cash bag contained Rs 18 lakh. However, later, he said that the amount was around Rs 26 lakh. “I had to deposit the cash last week, but since there was an extended weekend due to government holidays, I kept the cash at home in order to deposit it on Monday,” said Samuel.
In his statement to the police, Samuel said, “I was going on my motorbike on the dividing road of Sector 10-11, when I received a call from one of my company employees, Sandeep, and I stopped on the roadside to answer it. Just then, two youths on a bike stopped beside me, and one of them hit me with an iron rod in the stomach, and sprayed chilly powder in my eyes, and I fell down. They snatched the cash bag and fled. I could not notice the number plate.”
He added that the accused wore black helmets which covered their faces, and sped towards Sector 10-5-4-11 roundabout.
The iron road was recovered from the spot.
Surjit Singh, general manager, local branch of the company, said, “The amount was around Rs 26 lakh. Samuel would collect cash daily from the select outlets (around 15) and deposit it in the chosen banks. He has been doing this duty for the last several years.”
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dalip Kumar said, “Going by the victim’s statement, the amount was Rs 18 lakh. However, it is subject to verification. The faces of the accused were covered, and the victim could not note down the number of the bike. We have registered a case and the investigation is on.”
A case under Section 379-D (snatching) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Sector 5 Police Station.
